- I didn’t mention this in my last post (“A few fictional Asians”) but Sophie from Twenty-Somewhere is Chinese American. Something I’m working out in my revision proposals is how much to play that up — or down. Can mainstream chick lit handle a Chinese protagonist? Then again, will 20SW even be chick lit when I’m done revising it?

1. If you change what you believe about your character and story to reflect what you think “they” want, “they” will know it and most likely not buy it anymore than you do.
2. Congrats! I hope you get some good exposure from over there.
3. When I first started my blog, I offered to notify people via email about new posts. No one took me up on it. It will be interesting to see if people take you up on your offer.

In The Embers, the protagonist’s fiance is Asian-American. I really liked that aspect of it because it was the first time I’d seen it.

Agreed with Pseudo, you should totally make your character Chinese-American. It’s definitely worthwhile to have diversity in your stories.

I like that she’s a Chinese American protagonist, too. Way more interesting than an ordinary whitey.
