• Quick Longmire update: Netflix picked it up for a 4th season, yay!
  • On Sunday, I posted over at Writer Unboxed about the two things that I’ve been doing recently in order to maintain a healthy mindset towards writing: “Rising Expectations, Daily Pages, and Having Fun.”
  • once musical logoAs part of our attempts to become more cultured, we went to see the musical Once. I loved how minimal the set and script were, allowing the music to really be the focus. I’ve loved the song “Falling Slowly” ever since I heard it on the Oscars years ago, but it was a special treat to hear it live.
  • Andy’s sister had her baby! Now we can all spoil this little jellybean rotten.
  • We also saw Interstellar, which was intricate and imaginative even beyond my expectations. There were a few developments that I predicted, but still plenty that took me by surprise. Most of all, I loved the theme of love being the one thing we humans perceive/experience that transcends time and space. (That said, I probably would have changed the ending a bit.)
  • And oh yeah, it was my birthday.

Happy Belated Birthday! I got to see Once in New York and it was absolutely magical. I found it really interesting how it built off of the strengths of the movie and wasn’t afraid to play around w/ setting + characters. I thought the play was more exuberant and unafraid to have fun, while the film was more subdued and serious. I love them both, though.
Also, I love your Writer Unboxed post! Just yes. It reminded me of this quote by Ray Bradbury: “I want your loves to be multiple. I don’t want you to be a snob about anything. Anything you love, you do it. It’s got to be with a great sense of fun. Writing is not a serious business. It’s a joy and a celebration. You should be having fun with it. Ignore the authors who say “Oh, my God, what word? Oh, Jesus Christ…”, you know. Now, to hell with that. It’s not work. If it’s work, stop and do something else…I’ve never worked a day in my life. I’ve never worked a day in my life. The joy of writing has propelled me from day to day and year to year. I want you to envy me, my joy. Get out of here tonight and say: “Am I being joyful?” And if you’ve got a writer’s block, you can cure it this evening by stopping whatever you’re writing and doing something else. You picked the wrong subject.” – Ray Bradbury

    And now I really want a cookie…

      Laura-
I love that Bradbury quote! And thank you. :)

I actually never saw the movie Once, but now I think I’d really like to!

    Happy birthday!

Good point about fun in the Writer Unboxed post. Sometimes I read blog posts about query letters and so on, and it sounds pretty much like any other job search (and about as interesting to read about :-) ). You do wonder if the fun is still there or not.

I have a friend who’s been a professional writer since 1972,and I respect his professional accomplishments (he’s had commercial success and won at least one major award), but he never writes anything these days unless there’s an expectation of getting paid.

      Anthony-
      Thank you!

I don’t think the business dimension *has* to take away from the fun of writing — but I do think it makes a lot of writers (including myself) forget about the fun of writing at times, which is why I think it’s important to remind ourselves. :)

Awww, isn’t it the best when there’s a new baby in the family? Congratulations to you all! :)

      Juliann-
Thank you! We actually had to go to a big work event for Andy, lol… but that turned out to be more enjoyable than I expected.

Happy Birthday. And congratulations on being an Aunt. It’s the best. And yay on Longmire being picked up by Netflix. I love that show, which, coincidentally, I already watch on Netflix because I don’t have television reception. Great post, much needed happy news all around. Thank you.
