I know this is too many photos — even though I’ve already cut down so many! — and I know that most people won’t look at all of them, but I can’t help it. I had the most joyful time today exploring the Guangdong Museum of Art at Bai’etan, and its surroundings. I went on a whim because I saw a posting about the Botero exhibit that is leaving soon, and I knew he was famous but couldn’t quite remember his work… Well, what a treat it was. And the other exhibits too. And the sunshine paired with the brisk fall air. And the pomelo green tea with boba that I sipped as I walked. And the apartment buildings towering over me as I explored the unknown-yet-familiar-feeling streets. And all the angles and curves of the museum itself. And the view on this side of the river, this stretch that I’ve never visited before. And way that I could take my time because I was on my own, no pressure, no one wanting or needing anything from me. And the way art and beauty fill me up, emotionally and creatively. And the ache in my legs from all the steps there and back again. And the sense of common humanity that I always feel standing amongst all the people on the subway. And and and…

Two notes:

  1. Botero said oranges are the hardest things to paint, because their form is so simple, but each artist has to add their own perspective.
  2. The blue neon sign says “Artists Continue To Try Hard.”
